Custom Heart Model With Septum
give every surgeon a fresh shot
“The surgeons were lining up at our booth to get a chance to perform the procedure”
Sr. Product Manager
The Challenge:
A medical device marketing manager had inherited an in-house created engineering ‘heart’ model that had been used for medical device development. The model looked like a component from an old furnace; clunky and industrial. Nothing about it said; heart or even human anatomy. Our client wanted a heart model that sales reps and clinical team members could demonstrate their procedure. “Can Pulse MDM make a heart model that looks like a heart and includes a septum that feels realistic when punctured? Oh, and can that septum be replaceable so that more than one surgeon can try it?”
Model Design and Development:
Pulse MDM designed a heart model so that surgeons could enter the right atrium using a femoral approach and then by piercing the interatrial septum enter the left atrium to place their device. This project was executed by creating 3D CAD data and digitally sculpted. Due to the complexity of human heart geometry, Pulse MDM eliminated the need for molding by making the model using 3D printing. A septum ‘slide’ was designed to make the consumable replaceable septum easy and economical to replace.
Model Solution:
The model of the heart was made rigid with interior illumination and a viewing window so that surgeons could watch their progress within the heart. The small replaceable septum is a soft film in a frame that slides into place easily, quickly, so that every physician gets a fresh shot. Because the replaceable part is small it is inexpensive to replace. Our client related that their prospective clients found the transseptal puncture to be authentic to real septal tissue. The model was beautifully finished to draw attention at trade shows and conferences.
