Platelet-Rich Plasma Custom Medical Demonstration Model

Stop the bleeding

The Challenge:

Our client had a question:  How can my sales representatives show blood platelets after they have been separated from red and white cells without the complications and inconvenience of using real blood?

Model Design:

Pulse and client conceived of filling existing production syringes with materials that look like separated blood but are stable and durable.

Model Development:

The primary challenge for this assignment was to find the right materials and colorants to match the color andthe opacity of the 3 different layers – i.e., the red and white cells and the platelets.  Several samples were made for client evaluation and their feedback was used to refine the sample until we matched the look of separated blood.

Model Solution:

Simulated blood is shelf stable, easy to procure and poses no biohazard.  It can wait patiently in a the trunk of a sales rep’s car or a desk drawer, unobtrusively waiting until a demonstration is needed.  No planning required.  Further, a simulation carries a one-time development cost, while the use of real blood necessitates a recurring cost and literally bleeds the client’s cash.

Medical device sales representatives can conveniently use the simulated blood syringes to engage clinicians in the use of their two platelet-rich-plasma (PRP) systems.  Sales professionals can explain how their first system delivers flexibility by allowing control over volumes and concentrations produced to deliver what the patient needs. Their second system, elegant in its’ simplicity,  offers one-step preparation for the safe and rapid preparation of autologous platelet-rich-plasma from a small sample of blood at the patient’s point of care.

Platelet Rich Plasma Procedure Overview:

Platelet rich plasma also known as autologous conditioned plasma, is a concentrate of PRP protein derived from whole blood, centrifuged to remove red blood cells. Platelet-rich plasma therapy uses injections of a concentration of a patient’s own platelets.  Platelet-rich plasma comprises hundreds of bioactive proteins, including growth factors, peptides, and cytokines that stimulate healing of skin and soft tissues.
