Custom Central Sleep Apnea Implant Model
WHEN IS FAKE BETTER?
The Challenge:
Central Sleep Apnea (CSA) is a serious breathing disorder that disrupts the normal breathing pattern during sleep and has been shown to negatively impact quality of life and heart health. The Respicardia team’s goal was to better engage physicians about the benefits of their remedē® implant. They wanted a medical device implant replica for tangible demonstrations that would spark clinical conversations and give them the ability to challenge conventional treatments.
Model Design & Development:
Letting clinicians see and touch the implantable device would give the sales team a chance to review the device, the procedure, and talk about the functions of the implant as it relates to patient outcomes. The medical device implant replica needed to look exactly like the real device with the same finishes and match the same weight. Pulse MDM worked with Respicardia to include the features that were most important to highlight differentiators and to eliminate any product details that were not critical to the sales interaction. Medical device replicas are made with non-medical grade materials but are created to look exactly like the real device.
Model Production:
Pulse MDM created a professional sales kit that allows every team member to tell the story of their implantable central sleep apnea device. Included in the kit is a beautiful “looks like” model of the remedē® System. The replica is the same weight as the original and includes a clear top. The remedē® is housed in a professional case that has a custom foam insert to hold the leads. The outside lid of the case is branded with the product logo and the inside of the lid includes an illustration showing the positioning of the implant and leads in the body. The inside surface of the kit lid displays a label that shows where the implant is placed in the body and where the leads are positioned.
Model Benefit:
Making a medical device implant replica of our client’s sophisticated device is significantly more cost-effective than supplying the entire sales force with a production implantable unit. At a lower cost, everyone on the sales team can engage physicians in a clinical conversation while showing them the size and explaining the features. The replica, even without the function of the real device, boosts understanding of how the implantable defibrillator stimulates the phrenic nerve to help maintain breathing throughout the night for CSA patients. The remedē® System is a breakthrough implantable system to treat central sleep apnea (CSA) and the replica and kit provide visual & tactile support in engaging surgeons.

Central Sleep Apnea Implant Replica
Procedure Overview:
Central sleep apnea is a potentially serious disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep or has periodic shallow or under-breathing. Central sleep apnea occurs because the brain fails to send proper signals to the muscles that control your breathing. This condition is different from obstructive sleep apnea, in which you cannot breathe normally due to upper airway obstruction. Central sleep apnea is less common than obstructive sleep apnea. Central sleep apnea may occur as a result of other conditions, such as chronic heart failure; diseases of and injuries to the brainstem, the upper terminus of the spine, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, kidney failure, narcotics users, even severe arthritis with degenerative changes to the cervical spine and base of the skull. Left untreated sleep apnea can cause daytime fatigue, high blood pressure, heart problems, Type 2 diabetes, liver problems, metabolic syndrome, and add complications with medications or surgery.
